Museums – monuments of Rethymnon

The Historical – Folklore Museum of Rethymnon is housed in a Venetian building having been characterized as an historical preservable monument. It was established in 1973 and its collections include textiles and weaving tools, embroideries, laces, pottery, baskets, metal work pieces, coins, costumes, historical relics, etc.


There is a separate hall dedicated to traditional crops and the preparation of rethymnian traditional bread.


The Archeological Museum of Rethymnon is housed in a building from 1991 in front of the fortress of Fortezza. It includes findings of primary importance: Figurines, jewelry, tools, spearheads of Neolithic age both of Gerani and Elenes Amariou caves, ceramics, sealstones, jewelry, urns and goddesses in worship position from various excavated archeological sites of the county. There are also included a small Egyptian collection, red-figure vases, Hellenistic and Roman statues. It is also included an important collection of coins dating from different periods.


The Kanakakis art gallery or else the Contemporary Art Center of Rethymnon is housed in a beautiful exhibition center in a venetian building in the old town of Rethymnon below Fortezza and the archeological museum, dedicated in memory of Rethymnian painter, Lefteris Kanakakis. There are exhibited works by Greek artists, among them G. Gaitis, N. Kissanlis, C. Botsoglou, G. Psychopaidis and D. Mitaras. The Permanent Collection includes artworks by Lefteris Kanakakis.


Ecclesiastical Museum It belongs to the parish of the Cathedral Church of Rethymnon and is located just opposite the church. It includes sacred vessels and vestments and religious objects of almost 180 years (1816-1992). Among the exhibits it stands out the historic clock of 1894 which was recently replaced by a new electronic one. Other exhibits are an engraved stone slab of 1816, found in the church of Agia Barbara and a lithographic plaque of 1866, which was used to print marriage certificates, discs, Gospels, holy water crosses, pontifical miters, vestments and a small collection of Greek, Turkish, French and American coins.


Museum of Underwater Life operates in the old town of Rethymnon on Arabatzoglou Street. For the enthusiasts of the marvelous marine wealth, it offers a brief navigation in this world, with an interesting collection of mollusks, sponges, various species of fish and echinozoa. It was dedicated by its founders, the couple Moschakis, to the memory of their child, who was lost in May 1941 in silent underwater world.
